2023 USA Powerlifting Schedule

We are excited to announce the 2023 USA Powerlifting schedule & structure.

Raw Nationals and Equipped Nationals will return to stand-alone competitions for all ages. Bench Press Nationals and Youth Nationals will be combined. The exact dates and locations for the competitions will be announced shortly.

We are bringing back the 8 regional competitions in the summer and will be taking bids soon for locations. The full 2023 Pro Series meet announcements will be shared publicly by September 1st, 2022, mark your calendars!

With this new structure, the USA Powerlifting competition calendar is set up to give athletes ample time to compete at all levels.

Our first INTERNATIONAL event will be held in Melbourne Australia, December 3-4, 2022. Watch for more formal international competitions coming online in 2023!

Court of Arbitration Decision – World Records 2020 Arnold Sports Festival

Court of Arbitration Decision – World Records 2020 Arnold Sports Festival

(Anchorage, Alaska) After many delays, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled against USA Powerlifting in our case which argued for the recognition of World Records set at the 2020 Arnold Sports Festival. USA Powerlifting argued that we followed the procedures for sanctioning in the IPF as established and maintained over the history of the Arnold and other non-world events, and that all procedures were followed as established in precedent. The IPF denied these records based on rules never followed previously or since that time as regards these events. Ultimately, the CAS decision cited our lack of timeliness of our pleading to the IPF Court of Appeal as the reason for denying our claim. However, the then IPF Chair of that Court accepted our appeal, and one member offered an opinion. In short, the IPF accepted and ruled on it, later denying it at the Executive level. USA Powerlifting, in supporting our athletes, appealed to the CAS.

This ruling against USA Powerlifting is an injustice to the lifters.

The IPF claims it was not an IPF meet because it was not placed on their calendar, a job of the IPF Secretary General.
The Arnold did in fact appear on the NAPF calendar.
The IPF Secretary General attended the Arnold, refereed at the Arnold and sent in the World Records claim forms into to the IPF.
The IPF proudly displayed Blaine Sumner’s World Record Squat on their social media.
The IPF allowed a Cat I referee exam at the Arnold and recognized the promotion of that referee to a Cat I.

The IPF decided after the fact, it was not an IPF meet. There is no logic behind their punishment of the lifters.

As you are also aware, we have been expelled from the IPF in 2021, and the world record decisions, and those regarding drug testing highlight our differences. We believe that sports should be governed by those who are active in the sport, who have a history in it, and who remain connected with athletes, coaches, and the public. In following sporting news, at the IOC level, and down to the international federation level, athletes are excluded, disregarded in lieu of administrators, many of who feel no consequences for unfair decisions, watering down of drug testing, or disregarding athletes concerns. The fact that a glass ceiling exists between athletes and administrators in most sports demonstrates this. The defacto decrease in doping suspension time reflects opinions of attorneys and administrators rather than a consistent application of punishment of cheaters. Examination of suspension times among such organizations as the IPF for use of performance enhancing drugs, frequently now two years rather than four show this blatant disregard.

So, while we lost this case, we fought the case for the right reasons: at the end of the day, we support our athletes. This cannot be said for the IPF and its subservient “Courts” or the Court of Arbitration.

USA Powerlifting International Membership

USA Powerlifting International Membership Information

USA Powerlifting competitions are open to international lifters who wish to compete on a drug-tested platform against the strongest powerlifters in the world.

Historically, we have had international members who, with the permission of their home country, competed with us. Permission is no longer required if you meet the terms and conditions of our membership. Currently, we have 64 different nations represented by our international membership, with growing interest from many other nations. Our international members will now be able to compete under their country’s flag at USA Powerlifting events.

Criteria for International Member participation in meets:

Local Meets – Compete for placing
State Championships – Compete as International Guest
National meets (with the exception of Collegiates) – Compete as International Guest
Collegiate Nationals or Collegiate Only events – Complete for placing
Arnold events – Compete for placing
Pro Series Events – Invitation Only

Criteria to Referee

May referee meets based on their current referee level. (ie, must achieve National or higher to referee National level meets)
Are eligible to sit for referee exams with the same criteria as any other member.

International memberships can be accessed on our membership page.

Additional information regarding records, international events, results, and other questions will be developed by our International Committee in the future. We will release new details as they become available.

Arnold 2021 Postponed until 2022

We have been informed that the Arnold 2021 in Columbus will be postponed due to COVID. The organizers will be holding their bodybuilding and strongman competitions in fall of 2021, but are looking to bring back the expo and the other sports in March 2022.

As we get closer to 2021 Fall/Winter, we hope to have additional news on the format for the 2022 Arnold.

2021 Arnold Sports Festival Postponed

The 2021 Arnold Sports Festival has officially been postponed from it usual March date. We will be working closely with the Arnold organizers as they determine their next date and participation criteria to keep everyone safe during the pandemic.

National Meets 2021, Arnold Qualifying, National Team Qualifying

We would like to start by thanking our volunteers, meet directors, referees, and state chairs for their tireless efforts throughout the year. Your commitment to USA Powerlifting is what makes our organization great.

The USA Powerlifting Executive Committee has important updates on a few key topics it is excited to share with you. Our priority continues to be the health and safety of our members and we continue to consult subject matter experts across the country on our health and safety protocols to ensure your security and good health.

National Championships – 2021

The 2020 Collegiate National Championships remain scheduled for November 20-22 in Oaks, PA. The operations plan has been approved after being heavily vetted and reviewed both internally, and by the local health department. This event will be held on 2 platforms over 3 days and will be widely separated to ensure social distancing protocols. This will be our test for larger meets and how they will be run in the current environment.

Currently, the 2021 Collegiate and High School National Powerlifting Championships are scheduled. Our management teams are working hard planning these events. Our Open, Raw, Bench and Youth Nationals have not been scheduled as we are working diligently to plan and schedule around COVID restrictions and the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) calendar, which has not been finalized yet.

It is our goal to place nationals so that it makes sense to qualify and field national teams for IPF Worlds. With that said, National meets will not take place prior to June 2021. As soon as we have a final plan with dates, and locations for Nationals, we will release more information.

The Arnold Sports Festival

For 12 years we have been the premier powerlifting event at the Arnold Sports Festival. We will once again return to the largest multi-sport festival on earth in 2021. Currently, the 2021 Arnold Sports Festival organizers do not have a clear event date. Much uncertainty remains about the dates of the event due to COVID, but we are in close communication with the leadership team and will be at the 2021 Arnold Sports Festival.

Qualifying considerations for the Arnold powerlifting events will come from a variety of sources including; standings in 2020 The Hometown Showdown and previous QT’s from 2019 Nationals and by invitation. We will share more detailed information as soon as the events are planned and scheduled.

National Team Qualifying

NAPFs: For those interested in competing at NAPF events, currently scheduled for August 2021, we will consider first those who competed at 2019 Nationals and then those ranked within the Hometown Showdown. (You will need to post a total by April 1, 2021 to be considered for the National Team.)

Worlds: Normally, qualifying for international events comes from competing at Nationals. In the event we do not hold Nationals prior to the nomination deadlines for World events, the athletes who won spots for 2020 will have the right of first refusal for 2021 National Teams to compete at Worlds.

We are confident that we will have openings on national teams. These spots will be filled from our rankings database for The Hometown Showdown.
